José Montanha Ready to Unleash 'The Monster' in UFC Debut

For José Montanha, the hardest part wasn’t earning a UFC contract.

After two scheduled UFC appearances fell through, the 6-1 Brazilian prospect has spent months wondering when his opportunity would arrive. Now with Saturday’s matchup against 11-5 Louie Sutherland officially set, every setback has only made his debut more meaningful.

“I’m very happy to be here,” Montanha said. “I’m taking one moment at a time, and I’m looking to have a lot of fun.”

Twice, Montanha prepared for the biggest fight of his career only to have circumstances outside his control postpone his Octagon debut. Instead of letting disappointment derail him, he leaned on patience and his faith.

“I was very upset with the fights falling through,” Montanha said. “But now I’m very happy. I’ve been waiting for this moment for a long time, and Saturday, I’m going to let the monster out.”

Looking back, Montanha believes the delays helped shape him as both a fighter and a person.

“I learned that you have to be patient and wait for things to happen,” he said. “It’s all on God’s time. It’s going to happen, but it’s on God’s will.”

That mindset carried him through training camp. Montanha never allowed himself to drift away from preparation. He continued training as if the next phone call could come at any moment, and for this camp, he surrounded himself with new training partners to ensure he would be ready.

“I kept training. I kept pushing,” Montanha said. “Even though I was upset, I stayed ready like the fights were still happening.”

Facing him in his debut is Sutherland, an aggressive striker who has earned eight of his 11 victories by knockout. While opponents might approach that kind of power cautiously, Montanha plans to embrace the challenge.

“I’ll be the hunter,” he said. “I respect his power, but I’m the one chasing the action. With my karate background, I really believe it’s a good matchup for me.”

Montanha’s confidence isn’t limited to striking. Four of his six professional victories have come by submission while Sutherland suffered one of his losses by submission. Although numbers suggest a possible path to victory, Montanha refuses to lock himself into a single game plan.

“Every fight is a different fight,” he said. “Even though there’s a clear path to submissions, I want to show that I can strike as well. I have a karate background, and I want to let the leather fly on Saturday.”

Years of visualization have prepared him for the moment he’ll step into the Octagon for the first time.

“It’s going to be the realization of something I’ve visualized for a long time,” Montanha said. “I’ve wanted to be in the UFC since I was a kid. The time has come, and I’ll be ready for the moment.”
