There might be no love lost between Troy Williamson and Callum Simpson, but they did at least manage a handshake at the press conference to announce their rematch today.

They will fight on August 8 at the First bank Arena in Leeds, with Simpson – 18-1 (13 KOs) – hoping to avenge the first loss in his career, which came when he was stopped in 10 rounds in the same venue last December.

Williamson is riding high. He is 22-4-1 (16 KOs) but the 34-year-old Darlington man has scored consecutive upset wins over Simpson and Mark Dickinson.

Williamson had wanted to get into the mix further up the super-middleweight ladder, but Boxxer has held him to the rematch clause and he now wants to do the same again and stop Simpson once more.

“I’ve got a lot of self-belief and I knew exactly what I was going to do,” said Williamson. “I told Callum, I told everybody what I was going to do and I did it… I was a shadow of the man I am today [previously boxing at middleweight]. I said, boxing at 12 stone [168lbs], you’re going to see the best of me and December 20 you saw the best of me and there’s only better to come.”

Barnsley’s Simpson, 29, wants redemption. He was ahead on the scorecards last time but Williamson felt he was in control of the fight and he promised a quicker finish this time.

“I were up on the cards, I watched it back, I probably gave Troy maybe one or two rounds, at best, anyone that knows me knows that’s one of my worst performances and I got caught in the 10th and fair play to Troy, he jumped on me after that.”

During the press conference, promoter Ben Shalom celebrated his new deal with DAZN and said it allowed them “to work with pretty much every promoter in the world.”

“We’ve had a phenomenal start to our relationship with the BBC that will continue but to join the global home of boxing to be able to put on the biggest fights, to be able to pretty much work with every single promoter in the world, it’s a massive day for us.”
